There were only a few different antique reamers ever made that were embossed with the manufacture's information on them, and this is a super nice example of one of them. And not only embossed with the company name but also dated 1909. You can't beat that! Very few of these antique old reamers are embossed or dated, or, are old enough to turn purple. You hear about old glass turning purple???? ... the DARK AMETHYST color is the result of this reamer being made with manganese laden glass. Manganese is a mineral, a rock, that was mined, crushed, and pulverized into a powder, then added to vats of liquid glass, and acted as a decolorizing agent to turn the natural aqua-tinted glass into a pure crystal clear colorless glass. But when exposed to the ultraviolet rays of the sun or other sources of UV rays, it triggers a chemical reaction and the manganese oxidizes and turns a wonderful amethyst color. This reamer was passed through an industrial food sterilizer, a safe and permanent process which does the same thing as exposure to natural sunlight, except much faster. Whether old glass has turned purple by the sun, by UV rays in a box, or by a sterilization process, they all turn the same purple color as it is all the same chemical reaction taking place. Most import, only clear glass from before 1915 will turn sun-colored-amethyst. Not only does this deep purple/amethyst color make this a great looking antique reamer, but it also coincides with the 1880's date, truly antique, check it out!
