Prior to the 1980s, hunters primarily used military surplus camouflage or plaid. In 1988, Robert Hoague, based in Dallas, Texas, designed the Sticks N Limbs camo pattern.

This "Sticks N Limbs" camouflage pattern emerged following the introduction of Trebark camo in 1980 by Jim Crumley and preceding the Realtree pattern conceptualized in 1986, during a period when camouflage transitioned from military applications to mainstream fashion, particularly within hunting and hip-hop subcultures.
