c. 1930s; The Howell Company - St. Charles, IL
Vintage chrome lounge chair with cushions.
This chair hails from Howell's mid-1930s line of chrome lounge furniture, produced between 1935 and 1937. Designed in collaboration with Austrian-American architect Wolfgang Hoffmann, it goes beyond the standard catalog fare of the time. Instead of the typical metal "cane" back found on most Howell chairs, Hoffmann's design features sleek tubular chrome rails-evocative of Kem Weber's work for Lloyd Manufacturing.
The chair includes its original brick red vinyl cushions, along with a set of green slipcovers. The frame shows moderate rusting but remains structurally sound. The cushions exhibit moderate wear, including staining and flaking, consistent with age and use.
