Vintage Art Deco Vanity Set – Chrome & Black Enamel Mirror & Brush Duo

This is a handsome matched vanity set featuring a hand mirror and grooming brush in classic Art Deco style, with chrome-plated frames and black enamel inlay. Though unsigned, this set strongly resembles the work of Elgin American, a well-known maker of vanity accessories in the 1930s–40s. Each piece features the iconic stepped handle detailing and a central medallion intended for monogramming (these remain blank). 

Condition

These have been carefully cleaned and lightly polished. The black enamel remains largely intact, with light scratches, minor stress cracks on the back of the mirror and a few small nicks in the backs. Both pieces show mild pitting on the chrome-plated handles, though nothing that even resembled rust prior to cleaning. The mirror glass is clear and securely seated. The brush features a flexible pneumatic cushion, though some material is lifting around the edges. No personalization or monogramming has been applied. Structurally solid and presentable, they display nicely and come off like proper deco antiques.

Vanity sets like this were staples of early 20th-century grooming rituals and were often gifted or purchased for dresser-top use. Elgin American, a manufacturer based in Illinois, was renowned for its chrome-plated and enamel vanity items. Elgin American Manufacturing Company should not be confused with Elgin National Watch Company despite operating in similar times and both being from the same town.
