This Apothecary Jar is unmarked by a maker but is very likely near 100 years based on the history I was given by the owner, some 50 years ago. It is lidded and quite heavy and stands 12 inches tall. The decoration is elaborate with a portrait of Hippocrate father of medicine and the written inscription on a blue banner of "Kuso en Polv: " There are anchors, snakes, wings all in gilt ,along with 10 stripes encircling the jar in various thicknesses. The chip is of course a shame but I always arranged the jar so that it was not visable on the display shelf.
Strangely amusing ...I looked up what I assumed was Latin "Kuso en Polv" only to discover it is a mix of two languages. Kuso is a Japanese exclamation of frustration akin to damn or shit. Polvo is Spanish for powder. All these years of displaying what must have been a Joke on Westerners... is too fun.
