This vintage art deco vanity case by Richard Hudnut is a beautiful collector piece. It dates to sometime in the 1930s. Although you might think of it as a powder compact, the term vanity case refers to compacts that had multiple compartments for multiple types of makeup. They were popular in the 1930s and early 1940s, but did not bounce back into popularity in the years following WWII.
The compact is rectangular with beveled edges and a white metal body. The front of the compact has an Art Moderne champlevé enamel design in pink and blue. The back is engraved with a pattern made of vertical lines.
The inside has a mirror on one side and three compartments on the other - one each for loose powder, compact rouge, and cream lip rouge. All compartments still have their respective makeup in them.
The vanity case measures:
3" tall
2.25" wide
.5" thick
The outside edge of the compact is marked "Du Barry" "Richard Hudnut Made in U.S.A." The inside of the powder reservoir lid is marked with patent #1635631.
CONDITION
The compact is in good vintage condition, especially considering its age. It does show signs of use and age - mainly some tarnishing on the metal and the makeup. Overall a charming addition to any vintage compact collection.
