The University Sound UW30 underwater speaker is an economical moving-coil underwater speaker manufactured by Electrovoice, a division of Bosch Security and Safety Systems. The UW30 provides a remarkably uniform (+/- 4 dB) response between 80 Hz - 1300 Hz, with a TVR of 125 dB ref 1 µPa/V @ 1 m. The UW30 is suitable for activities including: synchronized swimming in small home pools, marine biology & environmental impact studies in aquariums and tanks, and relaxation during Watsu (aquatic massage) and flotation tank sessions. The UW30 is not recommended for lap swimming in home or commercial pools, or for synchronized swimming in Olympic pools, as the sound levels produced by this speaker are not adequate for these activities. (For these applications, we highly recommend using the piezoelectric Tonpilz technology pioneered and patented by Lubell Labs, who's portable LL916C/H and permanent 9484 underwater loudspeakers produce up to 8 times the sound level of the UW30 due to higher efficiencies and power handling.) The UW30 underwater loudspeaker may be used in tropical to arctic climates in freshwater or saltwater by virtue of it's high-impact ABS outer case and flexible thermoplastic cable.
To insure the safety of personnel and swimmers at aquatic facilities, the UW30 shall be mounted in a corrosion-resistant metal forming shell, the front of which is enclosed by a captive corrosion-resistant metal speaker grille, which is bonded to and secured to the forming shell, insuring a low-resistance contact. This mounting requirement is called out in the 2005 NFPA 70: National Electrical Code (NEC) Handbook Section 680.27, as well as in the 2003 International Residential Code (IRC) Paragraph E4106.9.1. In addition, the UW30 underwater speaker must be connected to a UL or ETL approved 30-40 watt commercial-sound amplifier's 8 ohm and Common transformer-isolated speaker terminals labeled "Class 2 Wiring Acceptable"; Amplifier must be installed in dry, air conditioned area, and it's three-prong grounding power cord must be connected to a GFCI protected AC outlet which shall be tested per manufacturer's instructions.
