Recommendations for Optimal Maintenance:
If the pump contains some residual water when it is not running, then this water may freeze, expand and weaken the housing, leading to eventual cracks and leaks.
To fully protect the pump, you should drain the supply line to the pump, then remove the drain plug at the bottom of the unit and drain the pump itself.
Tip:
When replacing, use new sealant on the hose adapters and a bit of lube on the O rings.
