This listing is for a heavy trinket or table box with an authentic, antique 1881 O (New Orleans) Morgan Silver Dollar, inset in the lid. Custom made for us in Taxco Mexico by a specialist silversmith experienced in crafting boxes and round vessels.
As there are no longer any hand engravers working in Taxco, we took the box to Mexico City, where we had it engraved by a specialist engraver located on the edge of the Zocalo, inside the Monte de Piedra, the oldest pawn shop located in Mexico, that was founded in the 1500's.
The decoration is like a stylized bound drum, and the engraving carries up along the outer rim of the lid.
The box is marked Taxco 925, and WBY for my gallery Way Back Yonder Antiques and Jewelry.
The total weight of the box is approx 78.1 grams, with about 51.8 grams of 925/1000 sterling silver and 26.3 grams of 900/1000 for the Morgan Silver.
This is a rare and unique item that is truly one-of-a-kind. I had this box custom made for me during my last visit to Taxco in June, 2024.
