The Zippo lighter seems so simple, yet is really a complex machine with many parts designed to work together to produce a single flame when you need it. That is what made me fall in love with Zippo lighters. That is what got me collecting unique lighters which lead to tinkering which lead to my small business of building and selling lighters. Every lighter is built by me in Denver, CO, USA! Hand crafted using the best materials available and to the highest standards I can achieve. Every mod is rigorously tested and not all of my ideas were upgrades at first. After some hit and miss I believe to be building now, the very best version of the Zippo lighters that have been around since long before I was born. But, by 1970 ZIPPO had pretty much perfected the design of the kerosene lighter. However that doesn’t mean there wasn’t any room for some modifications and improvements. In fact, some of what I do is refitting the lighters with vintage parts that Zippo gave up using. Some of these things probably don’t make financial sense for a big company. That’s why we have to charge extra for the mods. When mass-produced these things we do could really add up and most people probably wouldn’t want to pay for it. But ZIPPO is hands down the best lighter on the market thats why we chose to use them as our base model. So for the few true connoisseurs and those who truly appreciate the brand, we introduce to you our fully upgraded ZIPPO lighter insert build.
Each one is packed with high-quality Mongolian camel down. The hair has been carefully removed and the product has been carded for optimal use in all kerosene lighters. Will absorb 33% more lighter fluid than cotton or rayon with a slower evaporation rate. As camels have adapted to the desert environment, their hair has become quick to absorb moisture and retain it, unlike other wools that repel moisture. Every fiber is hollow and that allows even more fuel to be absorbed. The baby camel down is 17-18 microns, comparable to cashmere, which provides a greater surface area to hold more fluid, allowing more time between fill ups as well as a more stable, non-flickering flame. Because it is a naturally resilient fiber there is no need to continually change out the wadding, unlike with cotton or rayon. But we include an extra bag of baby camel hair so for when if that time comes you’ll be ready.
I replace the grinding wheel with one that has an increased ignition rate; it’s a rhombus shaped, toothed wheel that doesn’t jam, is harder more durable and long lasting steel that doesn’t eat up your flint. It strikes more smoothly, lighting every time as long as there is fuel and a good wick in it. I’d bet my pinky finger on that.
Notice the last two pictures, there is a close up of what the rivets we use look like. They are hollow just like Zippo did until 1963 giving the lighter a vintage look. Brass rivets on brass inserts, copper on copper and so on… If you want different rivets just shoot me a message.
The cam spring is what makes that distinctive Zippo “clink”. It is not altered in any way because I believe Zippo has done it better right out of the factory and there is no room for improvement.
Featuring a bottom plate with 3 gaskets and a spring loaded fuel port that make the lighter practically air tight. There will be more time between fill ups with virtually no leakage.
The wick has been upgraded to a thicker (2.3mm) and longer (4 inches) pure cotton core wick to provide a more reliable cord that lights effortlessly & maintains a steadier flame that does not flicker. There is no fiberglass or copper wire in these wicks. I use wicks that are 100% cotton. This upgrade also mitigates evaporation because it fits more snuggly in the wick hole. The wick is shaped in an “s” shape & secured in the wadding for even absorption of fuel. Up until 1979 Zippo used pure cotton core wicks. They switched to the fiberglass core wick with polymer blend and copper wire that we see today. I think they are worth bringing back because they ignite easier and seem to last longer. They burn clean with a bigger flame, but they don’t smoke or impart a flavor, are all natural, and just better wicks overall.
The flints have been replaced with Sunflower lighter flints because they are softer and easier to strike. They are silicone based and produce a bigger spark for a more reliable ignition and reduce dust, and wear and tear on your grinding wheel.
Always a conversation starter, this lighter is where functionality meets class and sophistication. Carry everyday or add it to your high end collection. I pride myself in customer service and satisfaction & I guarantee you will not be disappointed in any way.
Note: The lighters are shipped without gas. You will have to fill it for the first time yourself. 100% pure naphtha lighter as fluid is superior to many other fluids on the market that leave a residue that will ruin your wadding over time. See my listing for diy naphtha lighter fluid kit so you can safely store and use in your favorite Zippo the very best fluid. Fill it with naphtha and it always lights.
