The boss was originally designed to deflect blows from the center of shields, making it more difficult to split or sunder them with axes or other heavy weapons. Later the were used in faster and smaller bucklers for deflecting blows from longswords, backswords, and rapiers. Ideal for the re-enactor crafting his own shield, these heavy duty 14 gauge steel bosses are spun and then polished to remove the spinning marks before being pre-drilled with 1/4" holes for attachment to the shield. The smaller version listed here (6" outside diameter, 1.25" inside diameter, 1.5" deep) isn't large enough for an adult hand but gives the buckler or shield greater integrity and allows a little extra room for the fingers without having to offset the handle quite as much. These bosses come in several sizes (6” & 7.5” diameter in 14 G, 9.25" in 18 G stainless) so choose the one that’s right for your application.
