In the most typical use, cables have a standard plug on each end, consisting of a central male connector, surrounded by a ring. The ring is often segmented to provide gripping spring pressure when mated. Next, devices mount the socket (female jack) with a central hole with a metal round around it.

The RCA connector was initially used for audio signals. Some variants of the plug, significantly cheaper versions, also give weak grip and contact between the ground sheaths due to their lack of spring action.
