Medal in Commemoration of the 80th Anniversary of the USSR Border
Guards, 1998 issue, with unissued Award Certificate AND additional Ribbon Bar.
This medal is made in
brass and enamels and is 35 mm in diameter. The front shows the profiles of two
border guards with a red map of the USSR behind them and a Soviet seal on the
top. The reverse shows the Soviet border marker, the dates
"1918-1998" and writing (translated) "Borders of the USSR are
Sacred and Untouchable".
The award document is
of standard Soviet format, showing the name of the medal on the front and its
depiction inside. The name of the award recipient is left unfilled, but the
document is otherwise complete, with the facsimile signature of the Chairman of
the Presidium of the Permanent Congress of People’s Deputies of the USSR”
Umalatova.
All three items - the
medal, document, and ribbon bar - are in EXCELLENT unissued condition.
This is one of the
"alternative medals" issued by the Communist-run Congress of People’s
Deputies of the USSR - legislative body of the Soviet Union that continued to
operate for years after the Soviet Union's collapse! Naturally, these medals
were never approved by the President of Russia and therefore never became a part of the official award system of
modern Russia. Recently, they were banned by the Putin's government, and some
of them are now becoming scarce.
