The name scalping knife did not come from removing the scalp of one's enemy. The term was first applied by the early fur traders to designate a certain type of knife for trade to Native Americans. They were basically "any cheap butcher knife." Yet, there seems to be a particular style for these trade knives that developed. This classic style knife appeared extensively during the fur trade period and found its way to virtually every corner of the West. The hardwood handle is offset by brass wire wrapping on either end, making a well-balanced knife with a firm grip. The knife is approximately 1/2" overall, with a 7" long blade. Comes with a heavy leather sheath. Other knifes of similar appearance are made with stainless steel. These are from actual steel and can be blued for a dark finish and rust protection. Made in Utah. Items are hand crafted. There may be slight variations in size, shape, and color.
