The
Resurrection Plant, Selaginella lepidophylla,
is native to the desert regions of Mexico and West Texas. It is also commonly
known as the Rose of Jericho, Siempre Viva, Flor de Pena, Doradilla, Miracle Fern and Dinosaur
Plant. Among the native people it is also known as Rock Flower or Rock Feather.
The
Resurrection Plant lives in very harsh desert environments where the daytime
temperature can exceed 125(°F) and winter temperatures can dip way below
freezing. Most of its life is in a state of suspended animation and comes back
to life during periods of rainfall, which can be brief, and in many cases quite
rare. When it does receive moisture it comes out of hibernation and transforms
itself from a small brown ball into a live plant. SIZES VARY, when fully opened, the plant can range from APPROXIMATELY 2 to 5+ inches in diameter across at its widest point.
We have these plants collected in the mountains of the desert in Mexico, then personally select the highest quality ones we sell from the ones collected. The ones that don't make the grade are processed and used to make medicines, or are sold to other vendors as seconds or 'rejects', which end up on eBay!
In its
native habitat the plant attaches itself to rocks and gravel by way of its
roots. It does not need soil to grow.
This
incredible plant can literally go for years without water and still come back
to life when it does receive water. We have had some plants that have gone
without water for almost 30 years and yet even after that long they resurrected
after receiving water! We have heard from other individuals that have seen the
same results with 50 year old dormant plants! Talk about a low maintenance
plant!
This unique plant
makes an interesting ‘science project’ for children as they get to experience
the transformation of nature right in front of their eyes.
To revive
the dormant plant, simply place in a dish of water for a few hours or overnight and you
will behold a miracle of nature! (Since it is a desert dweller it is best to
let it dry out after a day or so and allow it to go back into hibernation
before reviving it again.) It can be resurrected over and over again indefinitely
for years on end.
