It is very easy to check if your dampers are worn or have shrunken by checking for any free play in the rear sprocket with the bike off, in neutral on the side stand.  Grab the driven sprocket and try to rotate forward or backward, if there is any movement you need new dampers right away.  Better still is to have a set ready to install at your next rear tire change and see what a difference new dampers can make.
