The Jefferson peace and friendship coins, also known as Indian peace medals, were distributed by Lewis and Clark during their 1803-1806 expedition. They carried a total of 89 medals in different sizes, including 3 large Jefferson medals, 13 Jefferson medals, 16 Jefferson medals, 55 "season" medals, and 2 (or 4?) others. The medals were intended as demonstrations of goodwill and were highly valued by Native American tribes
