Ophrys Apifera var. Chlorantha (White Bee Orchid) -  terrestrial orchid seeds

This variety was discovered for the first time by Johannes Jacob Hegetsch weiler, a Swiss physician and botanist in 1882.
Ophrys. apifera var. chlorantha is an interesting variant of Ophrys apifera, although general shape and configuration is normal, its coloration is very different. The flowers lack the red-brown pigments. This is due to the hypochromatic condition, a rare condition of low pigmentation. The level of pigment reduction determines the appearance of the plant and it can vary from a partial loss of color (semi hypochromatic) to a complete color loss that renders the specimen simply yellow and white. In general, the flower has usually typical white sepals and a greenish-yellow lip marked with white. Unsurprisingly, this variation is commonly called the White Bee Orchid.

Mediterranean growing terrestrial orchid from southern Europe.
Blooms from April to June.

The seeds for sale were collected from different colonies spread in central Portugal. The pictures were taken to individual plants that display the most frequent colors and patterns of these orchids in that particular area. It is likely their siblings will show similar features.

Seeds collecting date: July 2021

Note: Orchid seeds look like powder, a small sample contain thousands of minuscule seeds. For this reason it is impossible to pack a specific number of seeds. Each pack of seeds ordered is enough to sow 5-10 flasks depending on size and density.

Storage and viability:
  • Seeds were tested and analyzed on the microscope for confirmation of a well developed embryo.
  • For prolonged viability seeds are stored at 4C in airtight containers under 40% humidity. Most hardy orchid seeds may stay viable for years under proper storage conditions.
