Featuring an extremely RARE and large 34” Papua New Guinea Asmat Tribe Wood Carved Bis Pole Canoe Sculpture Statue. It has two tiers of ancestors with white paint covering the body and a beautiful multicolored patterned round base intentionally carved to resemble the shape of a canoe. These poles are central to the Asmat culture, serving as a way to honor deceased individuals, especially those lost in headhunting raids, and to appease their spirits. They are not just artistic creations but also powerful ritual objects that play a vital role in ceremonies aimed at bringing balance and harmony to the community. This is a large piece with striking contrasting colors and significant cultural significance.
In good pre owned condition there is minor paint loss and spotting throughout; no major chips, breaks or cracks and the existing wear blends with the piece. It displays beautifully. Please see photos.
