Offered is a rare, handwritten document from 1828 in which a gentleman appears before a Justice of the peace to swear an oath that a negro named Stephen is the same that was freed by his owner.

Such action is referred to as manumission.

This is a release to freedom of a slave by their owner rather than the government.

This act occurred in the Frederick County court of Maryland on May 31st, 1828.


This particular document is professionally framed and measures just under 17" tall and

14" wide.
