Pharmacy Apothecary Jar Lactuca Sativa Wild Lettuce Sleep Opium Substitute EMPTY

This is a vintage pharmacy apothecary ceramic jar marked, "Lactuca Sativa" that measures 11" tall x 4 5/8" diameter. The herb  Lactuca Sativa is a wild lettuce and a member of the compositae family. Lettuce seed oil was used as a sleep aid and for pain and has calming and relaxing effects. It was an opium substitute in cough preparations. In folk medicine it has other curing properties for inflammation. This is of course an empty jar...no medicine inside. The item was from estate of a pharmacist in Southern Illinois. See my store for other interesting apothecary jars from this collection. This jar is in good order with everyday wear. NOTE...there is a hairline at the rim. I am pointing to it in one of the photos. The gold trim is worn on the lid knob...see close-up photo of lid. There is a chip on the bottom by the edge which doesn't show until jar is turned over. See photo showing the area. The maker's mark is on the bottom,  " Jeanne Robinette of California, Hand Decorated Originals". The hand painted design features a medical  emblem (the Rod of Asclepius or caduceus or Staff of Hermes) in gold trim and a bee in gold trim at the top. Beautiful design.  My photos are of the actual item you are getting. See my store for other interesting items.
