O. obliquus is the first recognized species within the Otodus genus which is commonly nicknamed the mega-toothed sharks. O. obliquus would eventually evolve from a shark surviving primarily on a fish-based diet to the well-known species O. megalodon that thrived on a cetacean-based diet.
