If you choose the freeze tolerant ball valve, it has a plug on that side that is intended to break if the backflow freezes, then you simply replace the plug. 
The 1" and 3/4" are OEM Febco ball valves that are just a standard ball valve. The freeze tolerant are replacements for the Febco OEM units and fully compatible.
