This recent find comes from the Estate of Retired NASA MSFC Engineer who served in WWII prior to becoming an engineer. He began his Aerospace career with the Materials Branch of the Guided Missile Development Division at Redstone Arsenal in 1951 and in 1960 transferred to NASA working under Wernher von Braun. He specialized in evaluating and testing materials for rockets and spacecraft including researching effects of low temp and hydrogen on materials. Mr. Charles Cataldo, Sr. was awarded Exceptional Service Medal along with many others for his work on the Saturn, Apollo, Apollo-Soyuz and early Space Shuttle Development programs. He served as Deputy Chief of Materials Division, Chief of Metallic Materials Branch and then later Assistant Director of the Material and Processes Laboratory in Building 4600 at Marshall Space Flight Center (materials were boxed and labeled from his office at MSFC bldg 4600). During this time NASA research and testing focused on technologies handling liquid hydrogen and oxygen as well as propellants - Gel/Solid and Liquid and tank/body make-up crucial for the SATURN V ROCKET. This listing is for an early 1980's NASA SPACE SHUTTLE LASER-INITIATED REPORT plus TESTED/USED SAMPLES with details below:
  • Tested samples seem to be an aluminum alloy (Most likely 2219) with inner / outer tank and re-entry tiles attached for testing (samples are not dated - one has a label on the back side and those attached to base are labeled). Everything included was stored in bags together from Mr. Cataldo
  • 1981 REPORT - LASER-INITIATED COMBUSTION STUDIES OF SELECTED ALUMINUM, COPPER, IRON, AND NICKEL ALLOYS - NBSIR 81-1647 - 81 pages
All are in Very Good condition for use and age with some expected, but minimal wear including handwritten markings/notations on front cover. Tested samples have been stored in bags and will be shipped in those bags (all bags and other loose samples were stored in the inter office government envelope which has tears). Please see condition description and all pictures. NOTE: International orders are subject to buyers Country charging tariff/customs fees upon entry - NOT included in Purchase/shipping price for item.
