Never really been one for Morrissey shirts--Smiths shirts, sure, but just Morrissey? Most of them are images of him looking sort of silly and vain. But here, kids, we have none other than the holy grail of Morrissey tees: the coveted, and limited, merch from the "Kill Uncle" tour. Been after this one for years, and the backstory on it goes as follows. This still of Harvey Keitel from Scorsese's Who's That Knocking at My Door was Morrissey's first choice for the cover of Strangeways, Here We Come, but Keitel refused to give permission to use his image. Keitel, being a typical Brooklyn boomer, just couldn't wrap his head around The Smiths (Morrissey's idea to send him some lyrics obviously didn't help). Undeterred, Morrissey (being Morrissey) continued a rather relentless courtship of Keitel via a variety of correspondence, letters mostly, and so Keitel eventually relented. That the Smiths had broken up by this time was of no consequence; Morrissey remained determined to use the image, and so he proceeded to use it for the merch for his "Kill Uncle" promo tour, 1991. Originals are obviously quite hard to come by, and thus what a glorious find this was! It's a large Screen Stars, quite broken in, but still in very good condition despite some pinholes on the back, one (likely removeable) stain on the sleeve, and one small hole, no longer noticeable because I had it professionally mended (see pic). This is only the third Morrissey shirt I've ever owned (the other two are still listed), and it'll be extremely hard to give up, but again, that's the game. Heart breaks every time I must part with one of my long-sought-after favs, which this now is, but that's how it goes. Killingly dope.
