The journey begins with stacks of wood, custom milled and prepped to become something extraordinary. Templates guide each cut, ensuring precision at every step. Using a bandsaw, I carve the raw blanks with care and attention to detail. The finger holes are drilled with a forstner bit, carefully centered from both sides to avoid splintering and ensure a smooth finish.
Once shaped, the real work begins. Each piece is fine-tuned on a scroll saw, then routed along the edges and finger holes to add comfort and a refined aesthetic. Before sanding, I meticulously file down every ridge left by the bandsaw—a labor-intensive step that adds about 40 minutes to each set but ensures a flawless, professional finish.
For sanding, I use a combination of power tools and hand sanding, balancing efficiency with the meticulous attention to detail that’s required to bring out the wood’s natural beauty. The final touch comes with oiling, varnishing, or painting—transforming the wood into a polished, durable piece ready to stand the test of time.
At Moose-Knuckles, the artistry doesn’t stop with wood. I’ve expanded into epoxy designs, crafting perfect specimens by hand out of solid surface material before creating molds for casting. These pieces are sanded and polished with the same care and precision, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern techniques.
