Metro-North Railroad was established in 1983 and has a history deeply rooted in the evolution of commuter rail service in the New York City metropolitan area. It emerged from the consolidation of commuter rail lines previously operated by the Penn Central Railroad and later by Conrail. The MTA took over direct operation of these lines, forming Metro-North to manage the services. The railroad's lines and infrastructure are the result of merging several prominent early railroads, including the New York Central and New York, New Haven, and Hartford.

Metro-North operates five active lines and three branches, serving a large commuter base in New York and Connecticut.
