Maasai women make leather skirts for their weddings and wear them on special occasions throughout their lives.  This beautifully executed piece was collected by the sellers during their time in Kenya where they were Peace Corps volunteers in the late 1970's and returned many times through 2001 to visit and purchase items.
Most likely the skirt is made from self-tanned goatskin because goats, along with cows, are wealth symbols for the Maasai people.  Patches to complete the skirt are visible because it takes several goatskins to make one skirt.
The carefully executed beadwork shows the maker's pride in craftsmanship.
40" long, narrowest width 21", largest width 41".
