In "First They Killed My Father," (Luong Ung) the Khmer Rouge soldiers are depicted as wearing sandals made from old truck or car tires. These sandals symbolize both the soldiers' harshness and the grim realities of their regime. The tires represent the destruction and brutality associated with the Khmer Rouge, as they are repurposed materials that highlight the soldiers' lack of humanity and destruction of working items. Loung’s father explains to her that these sandals are not just footwear; they are emblematic of the soldiers’ violent nature and their capacity to cause suffering.

"They are destroyers of things".
