As an evergreen tree, the pine tree symbolizes "eternity" and "longevity," and its ability to withstand harsh environments represents strength and perseverance. Pines also play an important role in the Japanese landscape, and are one of the elements that evoke the beauty of nature. Cranes are said to symbolize longevity and good fortune, and "a thousand paper cranes" in particular are famous as gifts that convey peace and good wishes. Their graceful flight through the sky brings to mind feelings of freedom and happiness. In this way, the depiction of pine trees and cranes together conveys wishes for longevity, prosperity, and good fortune.

Gold Leaf Crafts Kaga

Established in 1987, Gold Leaf Crafts Kaga is a team of skilled artisans with over 30 years of experience in Maki-e. Four of our highly skilled technicians hold prestigious qualifications as traditional Japanese craftspeople.

We have received numerous awards, at numerous lacquer art exhibitions and showcases. These include the Yamanaka Town Mayor's Special Award and the Eternal Preservation Works Award, which will see our products permanently preserved in Yamanaka Town and Kaga City.

With the aim of preserving the artistic and innovative aspects of Maki-e, our Kaga-based artisans of Modern Maki-e have employed their current techniques to intricately and brilliantly paint classical motifs and innovative designs.

This is best seen with our range of fountain and ballpoint pens. The body of the pen is crafted with a sense of weight and presence using metallic materials, so that when you hold it in your hand, you can feel a sense of luxury combined with the beauty of Maki-e.

Learn more about Modern Maki-e

Tradition Evolving into a New Era

Modern Maki-e refers to a technique that differs from the traditional Maki-e technique. Instead of using lacquer, it involves manually sprinkling gold powder onto a silk base. Our authentic fountain pens utilize modern Maki-e and are meticulously designed to appear three-dimensional and visually stunning from every angle. Each pen is carefully handcrafted to achieve its exquisite finish.

From Ishikawa Prefecture, the final destination of the renowned Hokuriku Shinkansen, we invite you to experience the enchanting allure of traditional crafts through our exquisite and luxurious masterpieces.

Feature

Assembly Preparation

Each individual component imported from overseas must undergo rigorous inspection. After ensuring precision and quality, the assembly process begins.

Applying Gold Leaf

Ishikawa Prefecture is renowned for its gold leaf. At this step in the process, gold leaf is carefully added to the pen. This transforms the pen into a vibrant and luxurious item.

Adding Decorations

During this step, unique designs, exclusive to Ma-ki-e, are expertedly added to the pen. These brilliantly capture the beauty of the four seasons.

Final Inspection

After allowing sufficient time for the design to settle, we perform a final confirmation to ensure the completion of the product. It is then ready to be shipped and enjoyed worldwide
