We used to make these years back for painting frames by using an old seat post and a hacksaw with a bunch of washers and a chunk of all thread. It sort of worked, but not much range and a hassle to use. Grant Petersen at Rivendell Bicycles talked me into designing something to replace the tool he had been using for years that his customers would appreciate. So, I reworked his tool design and made a couple batches of the small version for steel bikes. Now I have come up with the larger model for frames with oversize seat tubes for modern frames. There are two sizes of the tool available depending on the type of the frame. Most steel bike frames, especially vintage bikes use the smaller model which will fit up to a 27.4 mm seat tube inside diameter. The larger model is for bikes with an inside seat tube ranging from 30.6m to 32.0mm.
To use the tool, just install it in the frame and rotate the "antlers" of the top cap of the tool to expand the wedge to hold the frame in your bike stand. The tool can also be mounted in the bike stand and the frame slid into place over it. The top cap of the Quill Clamp will not permit the clamp slide out of the jaws of the bike stand even if they are not fully tightened such as when struggling to mount a heavy bike into a bike stand. It is important to be sure the expander wedge is located in a reinforced section of the bike frame to eliminating the possibility of frame damage.
