The Vyshhorod Icon of the Mother of God is one of the oldest icons recorded in chronicles. It is called the Virgin of Eleusis “Vyshgorod” and dates back to the 12th century. Nowadays, it is called the Vladimirskaya icon and is housed in the Tretyakov Gallery.
The story of how Andrii Boholiubskyi appropriated this icon of the Mother of God is recorded in the Radziwill Chronicle. In 1155, he took the image from Vyshhorod, which was a fiefdom at the time. The chronicle does not say who painted the icon or how it ended up in Vyshhorod. Most likely, it was a princely contribution, possibly of Yaroslav the Wise, since it is known that he loved to found monasteries and endow them with icons. In addition, Vyshhorod was his residence, where he was ill and died.
According to legend, the image was moved from Jerusalem to Constantinople, from Constantinople to Kyiv, and from Kyiv to Vyshhorod.
Andrii Boholyubskyi took it to his residence in Boholyubove and then transferred it to the Assumption Cathedral in Volodymyr na Klyazma, then the capital of the Grand Duchy of Volodymyr.
It was these faces that the people of Kyiv and Vyshhorod looked at in the twelfth century.
