Colonial Candle was the first candle company started by a woman. Mabel Baker, a former Massachusetts school teacher, began making hand dipped bayberry taper candles in her tiny Cape Cod kitchen. The candles became popular and she started selling them in her husband's local hardware store. By 1909, Colonial Candle was officially in business. This vintage cup plate would make a wonderful gift for anyone familiar with the scent of candles at the east end of Main St. Hyannis or someone, who as a child, was able to make a wax hand by dipping their hand in the hot factory wax. Handcrafted on Cape Cod using time-honored techniques, these 3.5 inch cup plates have subtle variations that highlight the artisan's skill. Each cup plate is crafted using a mold created with a hammer and chisel, and then pressed with molten glass using an antique press. This manufacturing process results in cup plates that are similar yet possess their own distinctive characteristics. Look closely, and you'll find the artisan's initials and the Pairpoint trademark within the design.
