German Solid Silver Etrog Sugar Box with Lock & Strawberry
Finial Hallmarked Schulz Breslau Worclaw made circa 1840
Presented is a fantastic solid silver Etrog Sugar Box with a high finish on four paw feet and a great strawberry finial handle on the top of the hinge pin lid. This great piece has a detailed hammered decoration around the side and a lock mechanism in interior. It is Hallmarked for silver with a makers mark of Schulz for silver made in Breslau Germany or Poland for silver made circa 1839–49. I have posted a pictures of my research in the photos above. German silver of this period is usually assayed for 826 fine silver; while American standard sterling silver is 925 fine, so there is less silver in this alloy. It is in lovely condition with only some dents, a nick in the top of the lid and some fine scratches from use and care. The key is no included in this sale and the lock mechanism is untested. It is an excellent example of old world art and artistry making and a great piece for the collector of antique boxes and silver as well as an outstanding item in almost any décor of setting.
