Life jacket as used by Statoil, among others. Life suit is a maritime garment that functions as a rescue device in cold water. With poor clothing, a swimmer in winter cold water will start to have serious problems staying afloat after just 10-12 minutes due to hypothermia, which can be fatal after 30-45 minutes. A life jacket covers the entire body including the head and provides increased buoyancy like a life jacket, as well as insulation against the water. This will allow a normal person to increase their survival time at 4 °C by several hours, which can increase the chance of rescue. Such garments are also referred to as "Survival suit". Since the suit cannot ensure survival, several manufacturers believe that the term "Life jacket" should be used. Can we trust the life jackets?, NSSR A life jacket should be able to be put on over normal clothes and shoes in 2-3 minutes in the dark. It has integrated shoes and gloves and is completely tight when closed. The head is covered by a large, insulated hood, as a significant part of the heat loss in cold water occurs from the head. On newer suits, the face is protected by a screen that protects both against foam spray and against bird attacks on exhausted or unconscious people. The fabric is waterproof and in a signal color with reflectors. The suit is often also equipped with a whistle.
