The CostaCoat system
is simple:
The 1st
step, before your initial application, you will wash very well, with CostaCoat Prep-Cleaner…This
will deeply clean the pores, crevasses and loosen oxidation and remove old wax.
The 2nd
step is applying the CostaCoat Wipe-On Clear Coat. Wipe each coat on in a quick
fluid motion, much like wiping off a table. One should wait about 15 to 30 minutes between
coats. You’ll likely need 4 to 6 coats, for your initial application, to achieve
a deep shine and provide the proper film thickness of protection.
Tips:
Never apply in windy,
dusty environments. Do not apply in direct sunlight, or in circumstances where
the substrate is warmer than outside temperature.
Apply in temperatures
above 65 degrees, when humidity is 40% or less, allowing 30 minutes between
coats. In temps of 70 degrees, with less
than 50% humidity, wait approximately 20 minutes between coats. You can apply in temps up to 95 degrees; however,
you must move very quickly to maintain a wet edge.
About CostaCoat
Wipe-On Clear Coat
The CostaCoat Wipe-On
Clear Coat, is a proprietary polymer resin, that we developed as a maintenance
coating…This polymer resin is water thin, and is designed to soak into the
pores, craters and scratches on old weathered gel coat…With this resin soaking
into the pores, it enhances the color of the pores, as it dries crystal clear…Another
benefit of soaking into the pores, is that it doesn’t just sit on top, like
many of the other wipe-on systems that are much thicker and produce a shine in
one coat.
When formulating
CostaCoat Wipe-On Clear Coat, we maintained fairly tight constraints, such as:
A. Our clear coat needed to be environmentally friendly, very
low VOC.
B. It should have very high UV inhibitors, filters and
absorbers, in order to protect the substrate, we are going over.
C. Our clear coat not only needed to be easy for the DIY
person to apply, but it also needed to be easy to remove without damage to the
base substrate…We’ve continually been improving our products over the years, to
hold up better to the elements, being as strong as possible, yet having the
ability to remove our clear coat, with our proprietary stripper/remover, that
would not cause damage to the base substrate.
Other key notes:
·
Our
primary business, supplies directly to yacht maintenance professionals and to
RV detailers…This eBay store ‘CostaCoat-USA’
is our only retail location…We have had this store up for over 12 years &
all feedback is a reflection on our CostaCoat products.
·
Over
2/3’s of our customers are repeat, customers and due to their satisfaction, many
of them have been using our products for five or more years, on their boats and
RVs.
· We
provide the same products in a selection of four different sizes, to meet your
needs…16oz. (1 pint), 32oz. (1 quart), 64oz. (a half gallon), & 128oz. (1 full
gallon)…We sell KIT’s in all sizes (for use in your initial application) and
our CostaCoat Wipe-On Clear Coat only, for use in building (or stacking coats,
for more depth of shine) and for rejuvenation (or what we call bolstering coats).
Why to use CostaCoat
Products.
CostaCoat Products
have been formulated specifically for old weathered gel coat. As gel coat ages, it gets crystalized from
the sun, and worn away from environmental pollution…This leaves deep pores and
craters, as well as turning the once shiny gel coat into oxidation.
CostaCoat
Prep-Cleaner with water, will help loosen oxidation, and deep clean the
contaminants that are lodged into the crevasses and pores…The pores actually
have fairly good color to them, due to the fact they have not been directly
exposed to the elements, or have been filled with wax, dirt or oxidation.
When the CostaCoat
Wipe-On Clear Coat is applied to a properly cleaned surface, it will reflect
the color that is in the crevasses and pores of the gel coat.
Ease of use…The
learning curve of application is very quick and easy.
Ease of maintenance: Simply
wash your boat of RV well about every 4 to 6 months (when under full exposure
and depending on your environment and usage), then apply 1 to 2 more coats of
CostaCoat Wipe-On Clear Coat.
Why not just use
rubbing compound & wax on old oxidized gel coat?
Using rubbing
compound and wax has been the standard in the industry for many years, however
there are key issues with doing so, especially on old gel coat.
Rubbing compound used on an old weathered
surface, may burn through, as the gel coat and/or paint can be very thin and
unable to withstand even a light buffing, especially on surfaces like old
aluminum sided RV's, car haulers or camper trailers.
There is no question
about it, painstakingly using a buffer / polisher with rubbing compound can
hone a surface down, much like the way a rock is polished…However the problem
with this is, rubbing compound is a finely graded abrasive (much like sand
paper) mixed with a lubricant, to aid the abrasive in cutting.
Yes, rubbing compound
can cut its way down, in a lapidary fashion to the fresh gel coat below,
provided the gel coat is thick enough…But, here’s the catch: Old gel coat is very
porous and has very deep craters…Many times the pulverized rubbing compound,
combined with the cutting from the gel coat, creates a pasty ‘slurry’…This ‘slurry’,
then gets packed into the crates and pores…This of course looks very good, as
you can no longer see the pores or craters…The big problem with this ‘slurry’
in the pores, is that it’s not a resin and will eventually dry out, haze over
and fall out of the pores…This drying out of the ‘slurry’ gives one a false
sense of oxidation. With this knowledge,
one would consider doing a deep washing, after compounding, in order to get the
‘slurry’ out of the pores…That is a good idea, however whatever sort of wax
that is then applied, will then haze over and turn white in the pores and
craters…Any wax or compound that hazes over and needs to be buffed away, will later
create a false sense of oxidation, within the pores…This creates a vicious
circle, where once again, folks tend to bring out the polisher, with their
rubbing compound again and wear down the gel coat, in order to find new
material again.
When using wax, you
could apply 10 or more coats, thinking you’re getting great protection, yet, if
you were to rub up next to this waxed surface with say 600 grit of abrasion,
you will likely scratch the gel coat, or base substrate…With CostaCoat Wipe-On
Clear Coat, once two or three coats have been applied and the craters and pores
are filled, the following coats are literally a mil thickness (warp if you
will) of protection…If you were to rub up next to CostaCoat Wipe-On Clear Coat,
with 600 grit of abrasion, you’ll most assuredly scratch the our clear coat,
but it will prevent the gel coat from being scratched…CostaCoat Wipe-On Clear
Coat, is easily renewed, rejuvenated, by simply making certain the surface is
clean first, then wiping on a couple more coats.
Why not use a 2K Urethane
or a more permanent product?
Should you choose to use a 2K Urethane or more permanent product that would be more of a ‘one and done’, then we highly caution you…Should your initial installation go poorly or should that system one day fail, then your only alternative would then be to sand it off or use a chemical stripper that doesn’t discriminate and would severely damage your base gel coat substrate!
Final note: We wish to personally say “Thank you!” to our loyal repeat customers and also our first time buyers, for your patronage.
