INTRODUCTION
Columbus, Ohio was an intriguing place to observe railroading in the 1960s-1970s with the Pennsylvania, New York Central, and Baltimore & Ohio railroads crossing the city on east-west main lines and the Chesapeake & Ohio and Norfolk & Western bisecting it north-south. Flat as a pancake in this part of south-central Ohio, the crisscrossing of these five trunk lines meant many crossings-at-grade, junctions, and towers, the last of which was Paul's favorite. As a block operator himself, he often hung around these workplaces off-hours and was in the right place at the right time to record both the special movements and the day-to-day. Unfortunately, the 1960s-1970s was a period of general decline in the health of American railroading, something that becomes alarmingly clear by examining the photos in this book in chronological order.
The Columbus and Newark Division main line (a.k.a. the C&N) near Paul's home was a compromise that grew out of railroad competition in the Civil War era. Constructing what would be known as its Panhandle main line westward from Pittsburgh to St. Louis, the PRR battled with the B&O approaching Columbus before reaching a rapprochement securing a half-interest in a B&O route. Because of its proximity to our photographer's home, this 33-mile route takes up an inordinate amount of this book and since the PRR was the "800-pound gorilla" in the Columbus area, the "Standard Railroad of the World" and its successors predominate. All locations in this book are in the State of Ohio.
While this is not a comprehensive look at the railroading geography in and around Columbus, it does provide a snapshot of the mid-20th century lines that served the area. Unluckily for Paul, his best years of rail photography happened to coincide with the downward spiral of eastern railroads. It's a sad story, one of decay and downsizing, but it was the railroad he encountered daily. Amidst the decline, there were also signs of hope: new power, new equipment, new services. Perhaps, through Paul's wonderful photography, some notion of what was going on in the railroad world during the years 1964-79 can be realized.
