Unique and rare items related to Mississippi’s Freedom Summer. Telegram sent by CORE chairman James Farmer about disappearance of three civil rights activists.

On June 21st 1964 ,James Chaney(black CORE activist from Mississippi), Andrew Goodman( summer activist)and Michael Schwerner - both Jews from New York City, were arrested by Cecil Pice a Neshoba County Deputy Sheriff and KKK member.The three were were held in jail until after nightfall,thanks to released They drove away into an ambush on the road by klansmen, who abducted and kill them.

After a weeks of searching in which federal law enforcement participated, on August 4th their bodies were found. The men’s disappearance was reported on TV and newspapers front pages, shocking the nation.

It drew massive media attention to Freedom Summer and to Mississippi’s” closed society “

Included in the lot is original telegram sent by James Farmer to a local CORE office,mega rare copy of “Voting in Mississippi “ booklet from 1965 . The same booklet is held in Thurgood Marshall Law library Document Collection ( please look at comparison photo)

Also included is a copy of 1965 “The Voting Rights Act “ the commission report on the progress made under the Voting Rights act of 1965
