Chatelaine Silver Needlework Needle Holder with Thimble and Clip
Antique - Circa 1800
Origin: England
Metal Content: I cannot find a stamp, however this is an original chatelaine
and it is believed to be Sterling.
What is a chatelaine? A chatelaine is an elaborate clasp with multiple small
chains dangling from it. Tiny useful items are attached to the bottom of each
chain. A chatelaine is traditionally hung from a belt and rides at the waist or
hip, so the tools can be easily within reach whenever you need them. In the
early days, needles were a valuable item - precious to the needleworker and
the chatelaine was used to hold the needles - to protect them.
Size: 5 1/2" Drop
Length of needle case" 5 1/4"
All measurements are approximate.
Details: This chatelaine hangs from a fancy gloved hand. The waist clip is
sturdy and is 1 1/4" in Length. The thimble hangs from a shell shape and
the needle case is suspended from a silver chain. The needle case is
arrow shaped and it opens in the middle. This is a rare piece. I purchased
it from an ANG shop during a national seminar - most likely in the '80's.
I am certain that you will pleased with your purchase.
