This description From Sotheby’s when the original sold in 2019 for $1750000:
sothebys • Charles White's 'Ye Shall
Inherit the Earth' is among the artist's
most beloved drawings, embodying
White's social activism. The work depicts
Rosa Lee Ingram, an African-American
woman who became the subject of one
of the most explosive capital punishment
cases in American history in the late
1940s. Ingram and her sons were
accused of killing their neighbor, a white
sharecropper. Although they were
sentenced to death, the public outcry
was so immediate that they were instead
sentenced to life imprisonment. The
protest continued, and Ingram became
an icon as a key cause for social justice
groups. White drew this image, which
was later reproduced on a postcard and
sent to Ingram to assure her of the
efforts being made on her behalf. View
this work and more highlights on offer in
our Contemporary Art Evening auction
on 14 November, now on public view in
our York Avenue galleries in #NYC.
