ONE OF A KIND.......
This is the ORIGINAL PAINTING of card number 10 of the 1973 BROOKE BOND, RED ROSE TEA CARDS Set #16, THE ARCTIC. Titled ARCTIC SEAPORT on the printed card. The size of this gorgeous original painting is 10.25 x 7.5 inches painted on illustration board in either gouache or tempra. The artist's name is Walton. He is a great artist. The painting has been scanned next to a card to give you an idea of the size proportions. Painting is in stunning condition having been stored in a safe since 2000.
NOTICE....... the crop of the art on the card cuts off some of the original painting. So with the artwork you get to see what the whole image looks like. This is always a fun revelation.
In 1973 BROOKE BOND Foods produced a series of collectible cards to go in boxes of RED ROSE TEA. The subject of this series was called THE ARCTIC (1973) and came in a set of 48 cards. The series was numbered 16 in the subject matter of cards produced. The art work was commissioned for this series and it is signed by the artist (CLAIRE WALTON) on the art. This is the ORIGINAL ART work of card #10. It is titled ARCTIC SEAPORT on the back of the printed card but it says #14 ARCTIC PORT in ink on the back of the painting. So not only was it originally planned as a different number, the title was slightly different. It may mean nothing but it came to me with a post it that simply said "10". I assume this was an indicator that it would be given a different number in the line up. When I say original I refer to the actual art that the artist produced and the cards were reproduced from. This is one of his better works! Most of the time this art was done in different media of paints. In this case I believe this original art to be acrylic paint. It is painted on double thick (about 1/8 inch) illustration board. The entire piece is wrapped in a cellophane and taped on the back. The cello and tape are showing their age by yellowing (tape) and chipping and cracking. Some of the tape has fallen away and the sticky residue is left. You can decide if you want to remove it and show the true beauty or leave it like this for storage.
The art is just about 7.5 x 10.25 inches and is in stunning condition. I took up close shots of several features of the art including a tugboat, ships at the dock, a sea plane with a canoe attached, and a dock with rails embedded in it. The artwork is truly amazing and varied. It was kept for 27 years in a folder in a filing cabinet at NWF and after that, a safe for 25 more years. Several of the pictures of the art work are taken next to a tea card to show size relation. You will notice the card art had been cropped to fit the vertical shape of the card. The artwork was wrapped in a cello type of film that can be removed. The nice part......you get to see all the art in a full uncropped version. This art work does not convey the publishing rights which may still be owned by Brooke Bond. This artwork is ONE OF A KIND. So unless the new owner decides to resell, this is your only chance to own the real thing.
You get the original artwork in cello and an envelope to hold the artwork (with a tea card taped to it). What a conversation piece for your wall.
