Pure beryllium is a very light, solid and brittle metal. With a density of 1.85 g/cm3, beryllium after lithium is the second most elementary metal.
The gray metal is estimated as an alloy element because of its high melting point, its crawling and shear strength as well as its high tensile and flexibility. Although beryllium weighs only about a quarter as much as steel, it is six times as firm.
Like aluminum, beryllium metal forms an oxide layer on its surface that makes it corrosion -resistant. The metal is unmagnetic and spark -free - properties that are valued in the oil and gas industry - and has a high thermal conductivity over a wide temperature range and excellent heat discharge properties.
Beryllium is available. Various metals of the rare earths are offered at a good price.
The low X -ray absorption cross -section and the high neutron litter cross -section of beryllium make it ideal for X -ray windows and as a neutron reflector and moderator in nuclear applications.
Despite its sweet taste, beryllium is caustic for tissue and can lead to chronic, life -threatening allergic disease, which is known as beryliosis when inhaling.
Beryllium is used in:
- consumer electronics and telecommunications;
- Industrial components and commercial aerospace;
- defense and military;
- Medical devices.
Beryllium has the following properties:
- Beryllium is a gray -white metal with an unmagnetic, hard and brittle surface;
- With a density of 1.85 g/cm3, beryllium is relatively light;
- Due to its low density and high thermal conductivity, beryllium is ideal for use in buildings.
