Victorian era,1800s to 1900s,ebonized,black stained,laquered,paperback mache constructed,equitroire,writers lap desk.This method of making lap desks from paper mache panels was perfected in 1800s Victorian era,by soaking paper strips in a press,pressing together,drying; creating a hard wood-like panel that was lighter.Panels were stained black,lacquered to make glossy,then assembled into a laptop desk.Top of laptop desk has a Victorian, 10"×8" painted scene lithograph, still pristine due to clearcoat finish by ebonist. No marks scratches, or scuffs.Look at photos. Scene is encircled by gold gilding,in excellent condition for age. Look at photos. Desktop has decorative gelding around edge,still excellent;4 corners have gold gilded,floral designs in pristine condition.Look at photos.Desktop is 12 1/2" by 9 1/2". Desktop opens w/red felt writing pad,14" by 10", w/gold gilded border. Look at photos. 2 desk top hinges are original. There is a lock on front panel,no key. An inch or 2 has worn off bottom of rear panel, look at photo,very minor. Red felt pad has some wear, but is all there;has 4 to 5" spots from glue,look at photos,can be rehabed,minor. Inside desk are 2 inkwell holders and a 10 3/4 pen holder w/gold gilded decor.Exterior is stained black,lacquered glossyblack,no scratches or scuffs.Look at photos.
