This is an antique ceremonial staff that was recently purchased from a private collection in New Jersey. It is from the Yoruba tribe of Nigeria and dates to the late 19th or early 20th century. Is hand carved of wood and depicts a representation of the Priestess of the God of Thunder, Oshe Shango.
She wears a double axe blade headdress carved with ovoid shaped eyes and has pierced ears for earrings. Her cheeks have double rows of ritual scarification and she has an elaborate braided hairstyle. Her breasts are exposed and she has cross hatching in the pubic region. There is an indication of a necklace around her neck and she has a ceremonial sash draped around her neck with the ends in her hands. Her feet are bare and flat footed with indications of toes. She stands on a base etched with a zig-zag pattern.
This powerful Ose Shango staff was carried or danced with by members of the Shango cult.
Condition: There is a fair amount of wear on the piece, especially on the back of the double axe heads. She is missing her earrings, probably cowrie shells. Her nose and her hair have old breaks and damage. See close up photos. Good patina and natural wear indicative of ceremonial use.
Be sure to check my listings for the other pieces from the same collection. All the pieces have been privately held for the last 60+ years by the original collectors and are offered here for sale for the first time.
