AMER BIBLE 1816 /20/21 Families. Joshua Green, San(d)born, Hill families & pix

HERE IS A RARE 200+ YEAR OLD  CHRISTIAN,  AMERICAN,  GENEALOGICAL TREASURE!!

We are offering you a rare unique item.

Specifically, this full leather bound book is:

1. extremely rare,

2. WorldCat does not locate any other known copies of this edition,

3. it is a significant genealogical item for the Green, Sanborn, Sandborn, Burdick, Hill families with a New Hampshire connection,

4. it is a rare book with maps and illustrations of this early National Period, and each point is elaborated on below.

There is a lot to explain.

First, the book itself is extremely rare.  I have never seen another copy.   And I repeat what my research showed, even the WorldCat does not report of anyone having a copy of this edition, especially with all the maps, plates and additional articles and books added.

Second, this book is so rare that the WorldCat does not show any copies held by any of their extensive collection of libraries and museums... none.   Close to this 1816/1820/1821  edition, WorldCat shows only two copies which are known of an 1823 printing.

Third, the book would make a great addition to a family related to its original owner, Joshua T. Green.  This could be a member of the Green family, or his wife's family, the Sanborn (Sandborn) family, or the Hill or Bucknam family.  There are multiple other families related by marriage down through the years.

Fourth, and far from least, this copy of the Bible has many wonderful illustrations and maps, including some with early American engravers.  Each plate or map is highly collectable on its own.

The book measures 11 by 10 inches.  The book is 4 1/4 inches thick.

MAPS:

#1. Full Page (9 1/4 by 10 7/8 inches), Hand Colored, 42 Journies of the Children of Israel From Egypt Through The Wilderness to Canaan. 40 Yrs As Described, Numbers XXXIII. (between pp 146-147).

#2. Foldout Map (12 1/2 by 10 7/8 inches) hand colored, The Places Recorded in the Five Books of Moses, and an insert map (5 by 4 1/2 inches), hand colored, The Eastern Countries as Mentioned by Moses.  (between pages 148-149).

#3.  Full page (8 3/4 by 10 7/8 inches),  A Map of Canaan, Palestine, Judea, or the Holy Land:  As divided among the 12 Tribes.

#4.  Foldout Map (17 1/2 by 10 7/8 inches), hand colored in outline.  A Map of the Different Places mentioned in the New Testament With St. Paul's Voyages From Philippi to Tyre, and from Caesarea to Rome. This map had a separation along the fold which has been professionally repaired (between pp. 808-809).

CONTENTS:

Please, be aware that besides the usual age toning to the paper, there are occasional foxing spots to a number of pages.  However, even more noticeable you will see that there is a good deal of offset, especially on pages opposite the illustrations.  Also noticeable is that, on many pages, you can see that the oil from the printing ink has caused some added darkening to the paper.  Overall, the pages, illustrations, maps, and text are easy to view and read.  Let the photographs provided ne your guide on what to expect.

From the genealogical research that I did, the apparent original owner, Joshua T Green, a minister, purchased this volume.  He also, apparently, had a military connection.   The spine label clearly shows this belonging to him.  What a proud addition this Bible must have been for this family.

This Bible with its many illustrations and the full leather binding must have made this an expensive purchase.    Traditional Biblical commentaries are bound with the Bible.  All of these volumes appear to be stereotype editions.  Wide application of the stereotype technique in the United States, with improvements, is attributed to Charles Stanhope in the early 1800's.  Printing plates for the Bible were stereotyped in the US in 1814.

Joshua Green (1800-1835) married Ann Sanborn in 1833.  They had a son who they named Joshua T Green, the name on the label of this New Testament book.  Sadly, Joshua Green died in 1835, only 35 years old.  As said earlier, Joshua Green may have also been in the military at some point since there are references to, I believe, this same person as a Captain..  The son, Joshua T. Green, sadly passed away when only two years old in 1837.  The book, then, seems to have been passed down through the Sanborn family, Joshua's wife's family.  In the book, there was laid in, a small piece of paper with the apparent signature of (Elizabeth) "Lizzie A Sanborn, NH".  Please note that the Sandborn and Sanborn families are most likely the same family, having changed the spelling of their last name at some time.   Importantly, it is this small paper which makes us believe that this Joshua Green was this one in New Hampshire and not any others with the same name in Massachusetts or New York.

Last, I would like to point out that this printing is a wonderful example of significant printing and printers of the new United States nation.  The new printing technique of Stereotype printing had just recently arrived to the shores of America in 1814.  It had been successfully used in Europe.

On top of that, the illustrations in the book are spectacular examples of the American artists and engravers of this time period.  There are a number of era typical aspects that apply to this Bible.  For example, along with the Old and New Testaments, it was still standard practice to have the Apocrypha added to the Bible, inserted after the Old Testament and before the New Testament.  Within a decade, the American Bible Society took the position that the Apocrypha should no longer be included.

Also, there are other standard Biblical commentary books that were bound with the Bible.  This particular edition also included a number of hand colored Biblical maps as well as many engraved illustrations.  The name Maverick immediately stands out for his exception work.  Other names are listed above, noting all the maps and illustration plates included in this book.
