Offered here is a LOT of 5x WWII era No. 4 bolt action rifle No. 4 Mk. II bayonets and scabbards. After WWI, the British wanted to change their bayonets to a smaller easier to carry bayonet system. They decided to go with the spike bayonet. These saw extensive use until the 1950's. The first versions had a cruciform spike blade. Approximately 75,000 of these were made but then the manufacturers decided to cut costs and make it easier to produce by getting rid of the cruciform flutes. The next generation became the No. 4 Mk. II bayonet.
This lot is wrapped in their MoD (Ministry of Defense) wrapping from 1984 so we are not sure which version bayonets are inside because we wanted to keep them in their original packaging. More than likely, they are No. 4 Mk. II socket bayonets and not Mk. I since those are more scarce. Same with the scabbards, we are not sure which version are included, but more than likely they are Mk. I scabbards.
We are not sure of the condition of either the bayonets or scabbards because they are in sealed packages and we didn't want to open them and ruin the integrity of the wrapping. We felt the packages and verified the bayonets and scabbards ARE inside. The wrapping is slightly greasy so we think the oil has preserved the insides.
The five bayonets have the same exterior label. They are marked "B1-1005-99-961-7794 / BAYONET / QTY 1 AUG 1984 / DON (B3) / RAOC PRIMARY PACK". The labels are for reference purposes in the storage building. The first number is the reference number. The DoN B3 is the location - Donnington, Building 3 and the RAOC is the department Royal Army Ordnance Corps.
Unfortunately, we cannot see the actual markings on the bayonets or the scabbards.
These wrapped bayonets and scabbards will be a great addition to your historical bayonet collection. They may also be good for a display. As with all used items, a light cleaning may be necessary to meet your standards. Please see our photographs for a better understanding of the contents and its condition.
