This is a vintage 1949 Rand McNally Special Road Atlas featuring The Poconos "Pennsylvania's picturesque playground" and a vintage 1942 "Pennsylvania's Picturesque Playground Monroe County" book. They both feature the Pocono Mountains, Delaware Water Gap, Delaware Valley, and The Stroudsburgs.

The Rand McNally Road Atlas has maps of the United States, Canada and Mexico including state and province maps and city maps.  It has a copyright of 1949 by Rand McNally & Company. It has 112 pages of maps and index. It is in good condition but the cover is detached from the rest of the book. The front cover is missing a small strip on the top near the title (see picture). There is age discoloration and a few pages are dog-eared.  Also, some small tears on the seam and on the edge of the back cover. Inside pages are in good shape.

The "Pennsylvania's Picturesque Playground Monroe County" book is in very good condition. It contains 40 pages of facts, area attractions and things to do (and many pictures) in Monroe County including the Pocono Mountains, Delaware Water Gap, Delaware Valley and the Stroudsburgs, Pennsylvania. It also contains a 5 page resort and business directory and maps. It has a copyright date of 1938 and was issued in 1942.

My grandparents lived in East Stroudsburg and these books belonged to them and have always been in smoke-free homes. My grandfather was Secretary of the Chamber of Commerce and he had a real estate company in Stroudsburg. My mother wrote the following on page 3, "My father was Secretary of the Chamber of Commerce and he put the Pocono Mountains 'on the map.' This booklet was one of his accomplishments and the title was his idea. This also helped his real estate business! Cover picture by Cullen Yates, a local artist known for painting with his pallet knife instead of a brush."

These 2 publications make great collectibles for map collectors as well as contain historical information regarding northeastern Pennsylvania. It will also bring back some good memories for anyone from that area.
