Approx. 17"x10". Straps are approx. 7" from top of arch of strap to wood handle. This has the smell of a sewing basket/bag that has been in a sewing room. Just like my grandmother's! Not a bad smell, hard to describe. I think "old" would be the closest to the faint smell. The wood handles are tricky to open, once you figure it out, it works well. No holes o tears. Lots of seam binding, bias tape, trim, an embroidery hoop, several large bundles of a woven trim, and the usual sewing accessories.
