You are purchasing an original three-page letter written in 1922 by Sgt. Karl N. Knutson, USMC, stationed in the Dominican Republic to an unnamed friend. The letter has outstanding content about baseball on the island at the time of the American intervention, which military action is credited with comprising the origin of the longstanding tradition of baseball there. A complete transcript is included below:
"114th Co., 15th Regt. / Marine Barracks / San Pedro de Macous D[ominican]. R[epublic]. / Dear friend, - I received your very welcome letter some time ago and I was very glad to hear from you. We completed our seven weeks of training on July 15th 1922 with flying colors. The 114th Co. is as good as ever. We have got a company baseball team that can't be beat. Today we played the Regimental team and won score 7 to 2, and now they are going to transfer some of our players into Headquarters. I played on the team as catcher. We have got several good pitchers. Webb for one and another is Bailey.
Say Hall the next time that you see Michael Coyne and ask him if he got my letter, and drop in ands Marty, tell them that I am still acting First Sgt. of the 114th Co. and that we have a good company. On the 1st of August this Regiment will be disbanded and transferred into the Third and Fourth Regiments. The 114th Co. is going to be transferred to the marine barracks in Macous. There is going to be only one battalion stationed in the eastern district. This Batt. will be the 1st Batt. of the Third Regiment. The 180th Co 181st Co., and 187th Co's are going to be disbanded. We have quite a number of new men in the company. All of the men that joined this Regiment in April 1922 from the U.S.A. were transferred into the 114th Co. so that they could go into Training with us. We have the largest company in the Regiment now. Well Hall be sure and look up Coyne and Marty and tell them to drop me a line or so soon, as I expect to leave here some time in the next three months. With best wishes I am your friend, Carl M. Knutson."
