From my airship collection I offer this original 1896 medal commemorating the first attempt my Andree to reach the north pole by balloon. It failed and he tried again a year later and lost his life on that attempt. The listing title is what the legend is on the obverse of this lovely are quite scarce 2-inch medal. It has Andree in an oval profile his balloon (VIRGO which was abandoned after it failed) to right top of globe below. The reverse has another artic explorer Fridthiof Nansen in oval and his sailing ship with legend around. FRIDTHIOF NANSEN DRAN KRISTIANA DEN 24 JUNI 1893 when Nansen was exploring and met fellow explorer Andree. Andree soon lost his life while Nansen went on to explore and win much recognition including a Nobel prize and many other awards. See the scans. U.S. shipping is $4. It will cost me more.
